Building the Baghdad Railway, Iraq
The Baghdad Railway (German: Bagdadbahn ), built from 1903 to 1940, was planned to connect Berlin with the (then) Ottoman Empire city of Baghdad with a 990 mile line through modern-day Turkey, Syria and Iraq. Some historians have argued that the construction of the railroad was a leading cause of the First World War. Date: circa 1909
