Brtish observation balloon 1917
The first coming of light, early in the morning of Battle of Broodseinde during the First World War, as the " eye" of the artillery is finished its preliminary intensified firing, and the assaulting infantry go forward, observation-balloon officers are in the air and at work, reporting from baskets, slung beneath the sausage-like gas-bags. As the battle proceeds, it constantly happens that to get more advanced views, the observers are hauled down in order that their balloons may becarted off to ascend further forward. Date: 1917
