Brebieres 1916
The Tower of the Church of Notre Dame de Brebieres, in Albert. At the top of the tower the golden figure of the Virgin Mary holding aloft the infant Jesus hangs precariously, having been hit by a German shell in 1915, but secured in place by French engineers. Local legend had it that when the statue fell, the war would end. It finally fell in April 1918, during the German Spring Offensive
