Framed Print of The base or pillar of the Nike of Paionios
the base or pillar of the Nike of Paionios, a famous ancient Greek statue of the goddess Nike (Victory), located at the Archaeological site of Olympia in Greece. The statue itself, created by the sculptor Paionios of Mende between 425 BC and 420 BC, depicted Nike descending from the sky to announce a military victory. The base shown in the image is a triangular pillar that originally supported the statue, which was placed near the Temple of Zeus in the sanctuary of Olympia. The Nike of Paionios was dedicated to Zeus as a tithe from war spoils, likely commemorating an Athenian victory over the Spartans at Sphacteria in 425 BC. While the statue itself is now in the Archaeological Museum of Olympia, its original base remains in situ at the ancient site. Date: circa 1985.
