To Arms, Britons! First World War propaganda
" Arms, Britons! Avert These Horrors: The Triumph of Science and Efficiency." A typical propagandist reminder to the British of what they were fighting for, this brutish German soldier, half-ogre, trampling innocent Belgian women and children underfoot, pulls no punches, although its savageness is unusual for " The Sketch". The caption asks, " Would you like the same things to happen here? Would you like to see your mother and sisters killed or maltreated your property destroyed and your homes burnt? If not -those of you who are eligible -answer Lord Kitcheners call to arms, and join the ranks. If you cannot join the active army of the Territorial, do anything else you can." The atrocities committed in Belgium by the invading German army did much to galvanise public opinion and to encourage British men to join up, although the monstrous image here is in start contrast to he rather harmless-looking Germans depicted opposite.
