Archduke Franz Ferdinand bound for England, November 1913
Archduke Franz Ferdinand, pictured on board the channel steamer, Le Nord, en route for England, November 1913. On the right is his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg and in the middle is the Countess de Baillet Latour who was a member of the royal party. They arrived in Dover on 15 November 1913 and reached London that evening where they stayed at the Ritz Hotel. The following morning they visited Kew Gardens before taking the train to Windsor Castle where they were guests of King George V and Queen Mary. The Archduke spent the next two days shooting with the King in Windsor Great Park. The assassination of the Archduke and his wife in Sarajevo by Serbian Nationalists the following June was the catalyst which eventually led to the outbreak of the First World War. Date: 1913
