Archbishop Makarios III(1913-1977), president and ethnarch of Cyprus, picture at the time of his offer of a large reward for the discovery of the murderer of a young British architect, Peter Gray, who was shot dead in Kyrenia on 12th May 1961. This sketch was drawn from life by Stephen Ward, at a sitting specially granted to the Illustrated London News in 1961. Ward sketched several high profile figures for the Illustrated London News in 1961, but two years later he would become notorious through his involvement in the Profumo Affair. Date: 1961
