The Americas Cup race of 1901 saw Scottish businessman Sir Thomas Lipton as the Challenger with his yacht, Shamrock II of the Royal Ulster Yacht Club (designed by George Lennox Watson), taking on the reigning champion Columbia of the New York Yacht Club (designed by Nathanael Herreshoff). Columbia successfully retained the cup. Date: 1901
