Alice Marble, 1939 Wimbledon champion
Alice Marble (1913-1990), American tennis player, who was the first woman to win both the US Open and Wimbledon singles titles in the same year, as well as the ladies doubles and mixed doubles. She also pioneered the wearing of shorts for tennis, first in 1932 and in 1950, spoke out supporting the black tennis player, Althea Gibson and encouraging the public to accept black and homosexual tennis players into the game. Pictured here with Fru Sperling who she beat 6-0 6-0 in the semi-finals before beating Briton Kay Stammers in the final to clinch the championship
