Admiral Sir John R. Jellicoe
Photograph of Admiral John R. Jellicoe (1859-1935), supreme commander of the British fleets in 1914. Although criticised at the time of the Battle of Jutland for failing to categorically defeat the German navy, Jellicoe did succeed in neutralising the German threat for the remainder of the war. He became 1st Sea Lord of the Admiralty in 1916, was promoted to Admiral of the Fleet in 1919 and became Governer of New Zealand in 1920. He was created Viscount Jellicoe of Scapa in 1918 in recognition of his services during World War I
