Stalybridge riot 1863
A company of Hussars arrive from Manchester to support the local police, who have armed themselves with cutlasses, in quelling disturbances on the streets of Stalybridge. The riots were part of the unrest caused by the Lancashire cotton famine. WIth the supply of cotton from the United States disrupted by the Civil War there, many mills were forced to close, leading to loss of income for many workers and subsequently no money to purchase food
