This view is of the South Kensington region in the neighbourhood of the Cromwell Road. The buildings are seen from the west. The broad road running up the photograph is the Cromwell Road and behind the row of private houses on the right-hand side will be recognised Harrington Road, South Kensington Railway Station, Thurloe Square and Thurloe Place leading to the Brompton Road. To the left of the Cromwell Road is the Natural History Museum and behind that the small structures of the Solar Physics Observatory, the long Science Museum and the new Imperial College of Science and Technology are on the left of the photograph. The Royal College of Science and a portion of the Victoria and Albert Museum are seen at the top. The speed of the balloon when this photograph was taken was between 35 to 40 miles per hour. 11 July 1909, 6.26 pm. Altitude 1, 800ft. Balloon Britannia. Date: 1909
