Oglethorpe Fails in Attack on St. Augustine
Part of the War of Jenkins Ear between Great Britain and Spain, James Oglethorpe led a band of English soldiers, militia, and Chickasaw and Creek Nation soldiers. After capturing several Spanish forts, Oglethorpe attacked St. Augustine in a 27 day bombardment with British ships blockading the port. However the Spanish were able to get supplies through the blockade and Oglethorpe was forced to withdraw on land due to hurricane season. Oglethorpe in uniform raises his sword to point at the fort in the distance, soldiers carrying boxes of ammunition to pile near the cannons being set up along the path. Date: 1740
