Landing party of HMAS Sydney in a rowing boat, just about to arrive at Direction Island, in the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Indian Ocean, during the early part of the First World War. The previous day they had destroyed the German raider Emden off North Keeling Island. The sailor in the black cap is a German prisoner who spoke English and was taken along as an interpreter.
