Page from The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News reporting on the channel swim attempt of American swimmer Gertrude Ederle (1905-2003), who was accompanied not only by wireless operators and her trainer, but by a jazz band for motivational support. Unfortunately, on this occasion, the jazz band didn t work and Gertrude had to give up after nine hours. She would become the first woman to swim the Channel the following year. Date: 1925
