French soldier fights off German attack, Craonne
An incident on the Western Front north of Craonne depicted by Paul Thiriat on the Front cover of The Graphic. A few French soldiers were working in a boyau or communication trench when they were suddenly attacked by about 120 Germans. Soon all were killed or wounded but one who fought back with revolver and grenades so that the Germans, trapped in a line in the trench were unable to get the better of him. When reinforcements arrived, the German soldiers were eventually caught, according to The Graphic, like mice in a trap. Date: 1917
