Dame Rachel Crowdy
Dame Rachel Crowdy (1884-1964) trained as a nurse and served as Principal Commandant for the VADS (Voluntary Aid Detachments) to the Territorial Army during the First World War. She received the Royal Red Cross and after the war was recognised for her work with a Damehood. She was also appointed Chief of the Social Questions and Opium Traffic Section at the League of Nations, the only woman to head a department
