Cigarette a Child of the Army by Barry Montour
Cigarette a Child of the Army by Barry Montour. The lyrics are by E. Warham St. Leger, with music by J. Haydn Parry (1864 - 1894). First produced at the Theatre Royal in Cardiff on 15th August 1892 and the Lyric Theatre in London on 7th September 1892. A romantic opera, set in 1805, about two feuding French noble families. The title character not only bears the name of the heroine of Ouidas novel Under Two Flags (1867) but, like her, is a vivandiere, who loves the hero, and helps him, but loses him. Touring to the Theatre Royal in Bournemouth on 2nd May 1914. The image is of a saluting female soldier standing on a battlefield. Along the bottom of the illustration we see a smoldering cigarette on which are the words Theatre Royal and Comic Opera. Date: 1892
