British Military Recruitment Poster - Inter-war period
Photolithograph recruitment poster for the Burma Rifles, 1930s (c). Published by Burma Government Press. Associated with World War Two (1939-1945). Like all the colonies of the Empire, the security of Burma was dependent on the use of local troops to supplement the normal garrison of British soldiers which before the Second World War rarely exceeded two battalions (1500 men). This poster was part of a recruitment drive, welcoming new recruits with a drawing of an impressive military figure and the promise of good pay and prize money for those willing to enlist. It reads: All those wishing to become a soldier please come and enquire here. All those wishing to join as new recruits and become soldiers can come and enquire about how to apply, which regiments to join, how much pay, extra bonuses and prize money the Government will give, and for other details. Enquiries will be warmly responded to. Date: 1939
