Bismarck battleship
The guns of the Battleship Bismarck. The darkish red lead on the gun barrels shows clearly in this view of the ship at Kiel. It was often applied after the grey paint on the gun barrels had to be scraped off when it blistered and peeled from the heat of extensive shooting. The light stripes are piping for electric cables which ran below the gun barrels. An impulse produced by a coil when a projectile left the muzzle was conducted through these cables to an instrument for measuring the time of flight of the projectile
